Telephone Wire Bowl
South African telephone wire baskets are a beautiful contemporary art form involving incredible levels of skill and colour. These baskets are woven using plastic coated copper telephone wire. Depending on the skill of a weaver, a small bowl can take from 3 to 5 hours to complete, whilst a large basket can take up to 40 hours to complete. No two baskets will be identical as each artisan draws on their own creativity to produce the unique designs and patterns for each telephone wire basket.
By utilising the traditional Zulu skills in basketwork 650 people are now receiving an income .
